St. Augustine Lighthouse
In 1980, the Junior Service League of St. Augustine, Inc. began a fifteen-year campaign to restore the Keeper's house that was destroyed by fire in 1970. Later efforts in fundraising and actual "woman-power" was instituted by the JSL to restore the massive tower itself. The house was opened to the public as a museum in 1988, allowing visitors full access to the history of the site to include the restoration project to that poing. After much hard work and more fundraising, in 1993, the tower with its restored Fressnel lens, was also opened to visitors on a daily basis. In July 2002, the U.S. Coast Guard, through the General Services Administration, transferred the deed for the tower to include the lens to the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Museum, Inc., through the pilot program of the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act of 2000. Today the Junior Service League continues to provide support for the Lighthouse not only by offering various volunteer services, but also by raising funds and community awareness for the ongoing project.
